Safety Information:

CALL BEFORE YOU DIG! Before installing a tent of any kind, locate and clearly mark any underground and overhead utilities. For information of your state's utility one-call numbers, click here: State-by-State Utility One-Call Numbers.
Tents and temporary shelters are used for a variety of outdoor activities and events, including parties, weddings, retail sales and exhibits. Tents are a frequently rented item. Tents range in size from small portable canoopies to large pole and frame tents covering hundreds of square feet.
Collapse of an improperly erected tent can spoil an event and may result in property damage and serious personal injury. Tent safety depends on correctly installing the tent and then taking the necessary steps to ensure it is used in a safe manner.
As tents have increased in popularity as rented items for a variety of functions, tent safety has is an increasing concern because of an increasing frequency and severity of accidents. Tent safety is threatened by improper:

  • Installation
  • Weather
  • Slips, trips and falls.

Large Tents
If your special event includes a rented tent, please follow these safety steps to help ensure that it is a safe and successful event.

  • Safe tent installation begins with a properly trained staff. With the exception of small, canopies/pop-up tents, a properly trained tent installation staff is necessary to successfuly install a tent. DO NOT attempt to install a tent yourself. Your local rental company is the expert.
  • Once the rental company has installed the tent, DO NOT modify the poles or stakes in any way.
  • DO NOT attach anything to the tent or structure in such a way that it reduces the structural integrity or creates an additional hazard (e.g. - barriers with guard rails, shopping carts, product clothes lines, display panels or lights.
  • BE AWARE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER. If your rented tent is not designed to function as a shelter and severe weather occurs, evacute the tent immediately.
  • Use caution with the items used in the tent. For example, do not attempt to use a heating device in the tent that is not approved. Again, consult your local rental dealer for proper heating, cooling and electrical devices appropriate for use in a tent.
  • DO NOT use any electrical devices that are not wired with a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) device. GFIs are designed to limit the risk of electrical shock.

DO NOT use gasoline equipment or store fuel containers inside any tent.
